"If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life" - Marc Anthony

I had an interesting "water cooler convo" with my boss yesterday.

Background:  I work at a small law firm.  I have my paralegal certificate but at this firm I'm the "Client Service Coordinator / Assistant"... one step away from the Paralegal position I'm patiently (OK, I'm not so patient about it..) waiting for.

Somehow we got on the topic of dream jobs and he had mentioned how its so rare for people to actually have a dream job, or even to be passionate about anything.  He pretty much said these days people just find a job that pays the bills that they "don't mind going to every day" and if there is a chance to work your way up then, well, good for you.

Lately, I've been so confused about life, especially with work.  I've been at this firm for almost a year.  Its looking less and less likely that a paralegal position will be available any time soon.

Did I make the right choice working here?  Why did I ever leave retail? Is this what I really want to do? Will I disappoint my parents if I decide to change career paths?  Should I switch to another firm and start all over from the bottom hoping that there is more opportunity?

The questions are endless and my answers confuse me even more.

  1. GIRL...you and I are literally in the same situation. I work at a very small law firm as well (one lawyer) and I also have my paralegal certificate. Technically, I am one, but I never actually do any paralegal work. I have been here almost a year (9 months) and am also wondering if I am in the right spot? I'd would absolutely love to connect with you and talk more since it seems like we are in near identical situations! I also have a million questions that never seem to end...and never have any answers.

  2. I'm not a paralegal but made a big career move and took a grant funded position about 9 months ago. Now I sit here with a job that I don't know the end date of and one where I feel like it isn't the right fit. I know that my position will continue until at least the end of September but that's all I know. I wonder if I made the right decision taking this position, and what's next for me. It can be so difficult dealing with unknowns and I know that having support from other people really helps. If you ever want to chat or need a ear to listen, I am always here :)

    1. Big career moves are so hard. It was a big jump for me when i went from retail to an office job. I totally get it. Its so hard to feel secure in situations that you are questioning, you and not alone! Stay strong, and when feeling doubtful feel free to shoot me an email and we can chat!

  3. Even if you decide to not stay there much longer, now you have a year of experience there on your resume and that will help you get your next job, even if it's not in the same exact field. Go with your gut feeling.
